Now you can access all your Go & Fill 1Click bookmarks directly in your web browser with our new Bookmarks window. You can open the window by selecting Bookmarks from the main 1Password toolbar menu or via the ⌘⌥\ (Command+Option+Backslash) keyboard shortcut. Once open you can search for the bookmark or navigate through all your forms using the Select Bookmark menu.

This integrated Bookmarks window allows you to go to a web site, fill the 1Password login details, and optionally submit the form, all in one sequence that is much easier to use than the browser's built in Bookmarks or typing the site address in the URL bar.

2.3.0  (build #4142) – released 2007-01-25 – download

Version 2.3 of 1Passwd is now available! Roustem and I are very proud of this release — it is by far the best release we’ve ever had! Many new features, slick UI and a whole host of other changes make this a required upgrade for everyone. Best of all, this is a FREE upgrade to all existing customers.

New Look-and-Feel

Even the most demanding Mac aficionado will find the new 1Passwd enjoyable to look at! We changed the entire design to use a unified look-and-feel:

This unified look has much less spacing and is much more pleasing on the eye.

We also cleaned up the preferences, and even have a new locked screen:

The locked screen now allows you to enter your password directly, and details why the keychain is locked, along with instructions on how to loosen the automatic locking setting, if desired.

Folders

The new folder feature allows you to categorize your Web Forms and Secure Notes to make them easy-to-navigate.

1Click Login Bookmarks

Needing to remember a website URL can be just as demanding as remembering your user id and password; especially when switching browsers. 1Click Login Bookmarks solve this problem.

1Click bookmarks allow you to open a web page, fill the form, and optionally submit the form, all with a single click or keyboard combination. These bookmarks come in two flavours.

First, you can create bookmarks in your favorite browser for easy access:

This tutorial shows how to create 1Click bookmarks in your browser.

The second option is to use the All Browser Bookmarks application. This separate application provides you “Go & Fill” access to all your saved Web Forms directly from the main Apple Menu, without needing to open the main 1Passwd application.

The All Browser Bookmarks application is FREE to everyone, and available for download here.

Removed Locked / Unlocked ‘Ignition’

When we designed the new icon, our idea was to have the key be placed into the ignition and turned to the ON position when the keychain was unlocked, and in the OFF position when it was locked.

This idea was great in theory, but in practice the icon was too small on the Dock to be recognizable. We’ve decided to always display the icon on the dock as the standard icon.

Configurable Toolbar Theme

We had many discussions with user’s after we changed the browser icon several releases ago. The icons were too small to show the locked vs. unlocked states, so we scraped that idea. We also decided it would be best if we made it customizable:

There are now 5 browser themes available, including the Classic Key!

Installation and Upgrading

If you’re upgrading from a previous release, you can simply Check for Updates:

If you’re new to 1Passwd, you can grab your copy here

Tell the World

If you’re a fan of 1Passwd, please let the world know. We need your help to spread the word.

All these sites allow comments and reviews:

Blog entries and forum posts are awesome as well!

Thanks everyone for your support! We couldn’t improve 1Passwd as rapidly as we are without you!

The Future

We already have our plates full of improvements planned for version 2.4. The automatic form filling algorithm will be greatly improved in the next release, and we have some other fun things planned too!

Stay tuned!

2.2.5  (build #3883) – released 2006-12-25 – download

1Passwd version 2.2 was released today! This version is a free upgrade to all existing customers, including those who participated in MacHeist. To upgrade to 2.2, simply use the “Check for Updates” menu item from within the main 1Passwd application, or follow these instructions to update manually.

1Passwd Reader for Palm

Since we released version 0.8 of 1Passwd we’ve been getting requests from Palm users to add support for their platform. Many of these users wanted to generate strong passwords with 1Passwd, but needed a way to know their passwords while on the road.

With the new 1Passwd Reader for Palm you can take your keychain information with you where ever you go!

You can read up on this new application in our new User’s Guide: Full documentation for 1Passwd Reader for Palm. The new guide is still being worked on, but this will give you a taste of what it will be like.

Palm Reader is Free For Existing Customers

Starting in the New Year, the 1Passwd Reader for Palm will be sold separately for all new customers. For existing customers and anyone who buys before January 1st, 1Passwd Reader for Palm will be given away for free.

Consider this a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays present from Roustem and I. You can print off this blog entry and wrap it and put it under the tree, signed: “Love Dave & Roustem” :)

2.1.1  (build #3791) – released 2006-12-15 – download

A minor update to 2.1, including many bugs fixes and other small changes.

Fixed

2.1.0  (build #3744) – released 2006-12-06 – download

1Passwd version 2.1 was released today sporting a new logo, NetNewsWire support and a tonne of new features and improvements. This is a free upgrade to everyone, including winners of the MacHeist event.

NetNewsWire Integration

By popular demand we added 1Passwd’s password management features to NetNewsWire. Users of the most popular RSS reader can now access all the power of 1Passwd’s password management features without needing to leave the built-in NetNewsWire browser.

Automatic Local Backups of Keychain

With thousands of users, we often get questions about restoring accidently deleted keychain entries and forgotten passwords (most often immediately following it being changed), and deletion of entire keychain files.

There is nothing we could do to restore these items or passwords (due to the high encryption), but we thought a safety net could help our users out of these problems when they occur.

The 1Passwd keychain is now automatically backed-up every day to the ~/Library/Keychains/backup directory. Up to a maximum of 31 copies will be kept before the oldest ones are removed.

Of course regular backups to remote storage is still important to prevent data loss, but we think this safety net would protect our users from possible heart break.

AutoSave Exclusion Rules

AutoSave is a very convenient feature that saves your time, but sometimes you don’t want it enabled for specific websites. The new AutoSave exclusion list will allow you to disable AutoSave for specific websites, while continuing to leave AutoSave enabled.

2.0.0  (build #3538) – released 2006-11-08 – download

1Passwd 2.0 Now Available! Free Leopard Update Too :)

Version 2.0 is a major update of the 1Passwd Password Manager and Form Filler, and is available free to all existing customers.

There have been a lot of internal changes to the 1Passwd code base, and some major new features. Here are the most visible changes:

Secure Notes

The ability to store any type of information into the keychain was the most requested feature we received since version 1.5 was released. The addition of Secure Notes now makes this possible:

With the addition of Secure Notes, 1Passwd is now a complete password management system for both your online and offline information.

Version 2.0 brings with it complete support for OmniWeb and DEVONagent browsers.

OmniWeb Support

DEVONagent Support

User Interface Changes

We also made several changes to the look-and-feel of 1Passwd. The most visible change is the addition of a Trash can to collect deleted entries. This helps to make 1Passwd ‘more Mac like’ in that it is no longer necessary to have confirmation dialogs when deleting items.

Where is the Bookmarks Feature?

Those who remember our original plan for 2.0 will notice that we are missing something we had promised: access to Go & Fill from within the browser; a.k.a bookmarks. Our plan was to add these bookmarks, and we are close to having them completed.

After waiting 6 weeks since the last release, we decided that we should skip bookmarks and ship 2.0. Because 2.0 was already a large release, it made sense to go ahead and release it now without bookmarks.

By releasing 2.0 today, people can enjoy the Secure Notes feature and OmniWeb/DEVONagent support now, instead of waiting a few weeks for bookmarks.

Looking Forward

We have a full plate of features planned for the future, but these are the ones that we feel are the most urgent:

  1. Bookmarks: Being able to Go & Fill from the browser will save many clicks and a lot of time.
  2. Basic Authentication Support: Needed by older web sites and systems (i.e. routers) that use a ‘popup window’ for entering login information.
  3. Improved AutoFill: We have some ideas to improve the success rate of the automatic form filler.
  4. Leopard Support: Leopard is coming soon and 1Passwd needs to support it fully.

These 4 items are the most requested features users have been asking for, so we will be focusing our efforts on them.

We don’t have the delivery dates ironed out yet, but I think we’ll likely release bookmarks in version 2.1 since we promised this and it is really needed. We’ll have to wait and see to determine when the others will be completed.

Free Update to Leopard

When Leopard becomes available in the spring of 2007, we will be providing a free updated version of 1Passwd to all registered users. There is no need to worry about paying for 1Passwd and Leopard too ;)

Thanks to Our Supporters

We have been happily surprised with the support we’ve received from our users! It is wonderful having such a great community of surrounding 1Passwd.

I would like to extend a special Thank-You to everyone that took the time to comment on 1Passwd public web sites and forums, most notably these 3 web sites:

  1. MacUpdate
  2. VersionTracker
  3. iUseThis

We are gladly providing free upgrades to 2.0 and Leopard because you have helped us so much.

If you haven’t commented on 1Passwd at these sites yet, please do. It is very helpful to us and helps others find and understand 1Passwd. If you have already left a comment, from what I understand, you are able to leave a new comment and review for each version :)

1.5.0  (build #3237) – released 2006-09-17 – download

Official release of 1Passwd 1.5 is here!

The new version brings a lot of improvements and several key new features.

First off, the 1Passwd application sports a completely redesigned layout!

By adding a left category list you can quickly see all the data you have saved in your keychain. The layout was inspired by the Mail and iTunes applications since most users will be familiar with it, and it does a good job of saving space. We were thinking of using the Address Book approach, but felt there was too much white space.

Also, by grouping all the items into a single window, it is much more intuitive to understand what is and is not available when the keychain is locked:

Next up, we have added a new feature that keeps track of the last 100 generated passwords:

Normally this is not needed because the AutoSave feature will automatically save submitted forms for you. However, if the AutoSave is turned off, or a website does some funky javascript, you might lose the generated password. By keeping a history of the last 100 passwords, you need not worry about these problems any longer.

By popular demand we also added an export feature to allow you to store your passwords as a plain text file:

While the previous changes were all very cool, they pale in comparison to this last feature: AutoUpdate! If enabled, when there is an update available, you are presented with an overview of the changes and asked if you would like to update to the new version:

If you accept the update, 1Passwd will automatically download the new version, install it, and restart itself. This will even update all the browser extensions as well. All this with a single click! Anyone who installed the pre-1.5 versions of 1Passwd knew the old installation and update process was a real bear. With this latest version, updating 1Passwd is as convenient as using it!

A big huge thank-you goes to Andy Matuschak for his amazing Sparkle Framework! This open source framework saved Roustem and I days of development.

As always, we’d love to hear from you! Please join us in the forum.

1.4.3  (build #2928) – released 2006-08-27 – download

Version 1.4 made huge improvements to the automatic form filler (Use Identity / AutoFill) logic and resolved several important bugs.

To demonstrate how sophisticated the new algorithm is, we created a form filler test page. For fun, try going to the test page using your current version and see how many fields are filled. Then use v1.4, and you’ll see a remarkable difference! The new algorithm Roustem came up with for automatic form fill logic is brilliant. In fact, Roustem is even investigating how to apply for a patent on his algorithm.

Note that in this new version we have renamed the standalone 1Passwd application from 1Passwd Editor.app to 1Passwd.app. After installing the new version, you should delete the old 1Passwd Editor.app to prevent any confusion. One of the consequences of this change is you will be asked to confirm access for every item in the keychain:

Be sure to click on Always Allow. What I did to make this as painless as possible was I confirmed all entries in one sitting. To do this, I opened the editor and clicked on the first entry. Once the popup appeared I pressed the space bar to accept the default (Always Allow). To select the next entry I press the down-arrow, which pops up the next confirmation dialog. I repeated this process by quickly hitting space/down-arrow/space/down-arrow. If you do this quickly, you should be able to do a hundred saved forms in a minute.

In addition to the bug fixes, note that we renamed the “Fill Form” menu item to “Restore Form”. The reason for this is many users commented that it was confusing because 1Passwd does have automatic form filling capabilities and save/fill form features. Also, Save/Restore complement each other.

In version 1.5, we plan to simplify the 1Passwd installation process and add the auto-update feature. As always, if there is anything else you want to see in 1Passwd, please do not hesitate to contact us or, even better, post in the forum.

1.3.1  (build #2535) – released 2006-07-15 – download

1Passwd version 1.3 brings several new features and some bug fixes too. You can grab the new release from our Download Page.

A quick note for our existing users: Upgrading is optional; if you’re not experiencing any problems and you don’t need the new features just yet, there is no need to upgrade. You will still be able to upgrade to future versions of 1Passwd.

Alright — so what’s new? First up, AutoSaved entries are now displayed separately from the other forms in the Fill Form dropdown:

Currently this is only for Camino and Safari; Firefox and Flock will get this goodie in the next release.

Second up, we now support importing data from Web Confidential. If you have existing data in Web Confidential, then fire up the new 1Passwd Editor and use the “File -> Import Web Confidential Passwords…” menu item:

Next up, we have simplified the process of configuring your Keychain preferences. You can now use the 1Passwd Editor Preferences Panel to configure your inactivity timeout and lock on sleep security options:

Last but not least, you can now change your default location for the 1Passwd.keychain. This means you can now store your keychain where ever on the hard drive you want, on a network drive, or take it with you on a USB key. See Changing the Default Keychain Location for more details.

Of course, we’re not perfect and neither are our products, so there are a few bugs that users identified that we needed to stomp. The most important fixes were related to AutoSave: Camino & Safari will no longer AutoSave a form that was filled using Fill Form, and Firefox will now AutoSave websites that use JavaScript to submit forms.

Camino fans have been beating down our door since our first beta demanding 1Passwd support their favorite browser.

Well Camino fans hold onto your hats: 1Passwd v1.2 has added support for Camino!

The Camino extension is in it’s first release, so it may contain a few bugs. However, in our testing it has behaved quite well. See the Camino installation instructions for setup instructions.

In addition to Camino, we have also improved the Fill & Submit algorithm to support more sites. Furthermore, improvements to the Identity Fill will increase its success rate.
